These three words describe three different scopes, and the difference matters when you are writing a specification. The gearbox test dynamometer is the absorbing or driving machine. The gearbox test bench is that machine plus the mounting, coupling, instrumentation and control needed to run a unit under load. The gearbox test cell is the room and the services around the bench.

Transmission test cell configurations we build

A transmission test bench for R&D looks nothing like an end-of-line one. R&D and durability rigs need wide operating envelopes, high channel counts and long unattended runs. An end-of-line transmission test cell needs cycle time, repeatability, a fixed test recipe and a pass/fail report the production line can act on.

We build both, plus the cases in between: quality audit benches, overhaul and revision test stands, NVH-oriented rigs, and back-to-back arrangements where power is recirculated rather than absorbed.

Frequently asked questions — gearbox and transmission test systems

Is a gearbox test bench the same as a transmission test bench?

In practice the terms are used interchangeably, and we build both under the same engineering. The meaningful distinction is the configuration: a single-input single-output gearbox test bench is a different machine from a transmission test cell with one driving and two absorbing dynamometers.

Can one test cell handle several gearbox models?

Yes, and it usually should. We design the fixturing, the shaft arrangement and the test recipes so that changeover between models is a planned operation rather than a rebuild. The realistic model range is decided during the configuration phase.

Do you supply end-of-line gearbox test benches for production lines?

Yes. End-of-line benches are specified around cycle time, repeatability and reporting, with a fixed recipe and an unambiguous pass/fail output that integrates with production systems.

What about testing electric drive units and e-axles?
